Like former wife Jennifer Lopez, Anthony’s talents are diverse, though he isn’t a dancer. In fact, Anthony is similar to Lopez in a number of respects; both are Nuyoricans - people of Puerto Rican ancestry born in New York City - for example.

Early Life

Marc Anthony was born Marco Antonio Muñiz in New York City to Puerto Rican parents on September 16, 1968. His parents - Guillerminna, a housewife, and Felipe Muñiz, a musician and hospital lunchroom worker - named him after Mexican singer Marco Antonio Muñiz.

He has a sister named Yolanda Muñiz. He also has four older brothers and two additional older sisters - siblings from his parents’ prior marriages.

There doesn’t appear to be a lot of information about Anthony’s early life online. The only record he owned while growing up in East Harlem was allegedly The Eagles’ “Hotel California,” which remains his favorite song; in fact, he occasionally performs it during his shows.

Anthony began writing his own songs when he was in his teens.

Music

Marc Anthony released his first album, When The Night Is Over, in 1991. Since then, his life has been a string of hits, awards and honors. He won his first two Grammies in 1998 (Best Latin/Tropical Performance for “Contra La Corriente”) and 1999 (Song of the Year for “Dimelo”).

From his website:

“Driven in part by the crossover success of his smash single ‘I Need to Know (Dimelo),’ ‘Marc Anthony,’ his English language debut album, helped usher in 1999’s Latin pop explosion, and went on to achieve triple platinum status in the U.S. And, in 2005 Marc Anthony went home double fisted with a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album of the Year for ‘Amar Sin Mentiras’ and another Grammy for Best Tropical Album of the Year for ‘Valio la Pena.’ He has won a total of 18 ‘Premio lo Nuestro’ Awards throughout his career, the most won by any artist.”

Though best known for his salsa songs and ballads, Anthony’s repertoire isn’t limited to a particular genre. Being bilingual has helped him succeed as a crossover artist.

Acting

Marc Anthony has also made a splash in the film industry, appearing in a number of movies including “Bringing Out the Dead” (1999), “In the Time of the Butterflies” (2001), “Man On Fire” (2004) and “El Cantante” (2007). In the latter, he played the late salsa superstar Hector Lavoe, which Anthony’s wife, Jennifer Lopez, playing Lavoe’s wife, Puchi.
