Harlem Nocturne

Sultry Alicia Keys wrote a cool solo piano intro to “Harlem Nocturne.”

“Harlem Nocturne” is a jazz standard written by Earle Hagen and Dick Rogers in 1939 and adopted by bandleader Randy Brooks as his theme song the next year. It has been recorded by many artists, including the Glen Miller Orchestra, Bill Haley and His Comets, Duke Ellington and David Sanborn.

Curiously, Wikipedia’s article about Harlem Nocturne doesn’t mention Tito Puente, whose interpretation on the album Tito Puente & Buddy Morrow: Revolving Bandstand (1960) ranks as one of my favorite Latin songs.

Harlem Nocturne (Tito Puente)

Though lyrics have been written for vocal renditions, the original song has no lyrics, leaving the meaning wide open for interpretation. To me, Puente’s version sounds passionately mysterious, suspenseful and very sexy, or, as described on the official Earl Hagen website, “unforgettably sultry” - like something from a James Bond soundtrack.
